Baclofen

Baclofen makes your muscles relax. Baclofen is used to treat muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis, meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord), head injuries, and motor neuron diseases.

It is also helpful in the treatment of nerve pain, persistent hiccups and alcohol withdrawal.

Useful information

Multiple sclerosis is a disease caused by the body’s defense system attacking the brain and spinal cord.

The defense (immune) system attacks the covering (myelin sheath) of the brain and spinal cord. This causes scars on the nerves and the covering and disrupts messages sent across the nerve.

The brain and spinal cord control the body via signals that are transported through nerves.

When the nerves get damaged, they send signals arbitrarily to muscles and cause them to tighten or spasm.

Baclofen helps your muscles relax or controls hiccups by inhibiting the release of chemicals (aspartate and glutamate) that cause signals to be transmitted to the muscles.
