Propylthiouracil is used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). People with an overactive thyroid experience diarrhea, shortness of breath, mood swings, weight loss and sweating.
The thyroid is an organ that produces hormones and located in the neck region. The hormones produced by the thyroid control your temperature, heart rate, brain development, and other important body functions.
The thyroid gland requires iodine for its normal function. Propylthiouracil disrupts the processing of iodine needed for use by the thyroid. Propylthiouracil does this by blocking the activity of proteins (peroxidase).
You may experience:
Dizziness
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Nausea
Loss of taste
Muscle pains
You may eat normally while taking propylthiouracil .
Excess iodine is not recommended if you are treating an overactive thyroid. It is advisable to adopt a low iodine diet, such as avoiding cheese, eggs, and processed foods.
If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.
If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.
If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.
Propylthiouracil doesn’t affect the effectiveness of contraceptives, fertility or sexual function.
Inform your doctor early on if you get pregnant whilst taking propylthiouracil.
It is not recommended to take propylthiouracil when pregnant because it can cause birth defects. Your doctor and pharmacist will help decide the appropriate thyroid treatment when pregnant.
