Omeprazole is used to treat stomach ulcer, heartburns, acid reflux and stomach upset. Certain medications are harsh on the walls of the stomach, omeprazole can be given together to help protect your stomach walls.

How does Omeprazole work?

Acid (hydrochloric acid) in the stomach aids in the digestion of food. Omeprazole blocks proteins (acid pump) that produce acid in the stomach. This reduces excess stomach acid which is responsible for reflux, heartburns and pains in ulcer.

What are the side-effects I may experience?

You may experience:

• Headaches

• Flatulence

• Stomach pain

• Constipation

• Diarrhea

Are there any medications and foods I should avoid?

You may eat normally while using omeprazole.

You shouldn’t take alcohol as it can worsen your tummy pains.

I forgot a dose. What should I do?

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Can I drive or operate machinery?

You may feel dizzy when on omeprazole. You shouldn’t be driving and operating machinery if your experience this side-effect when using omeprazole.

Should I be bothered about possible addiction or dependence?

Omeprazole isn’t addictive.

Will my sexual performance, fertility or contraceptive be impaired?

Omeprazole has not been shown to affect sexual performance, fertility or contraceptives.

Can I use this medication if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

It is safe to use omeprazole when pregnant or breastfeeding.
