Furosemide

Furosemide is used to treat treat hypertension, fluid buildup and swelling (oedema), heart failure and in kidney diseases.
      ### Useful information

It is advisable to take this medication in the morning or before 5:00 in the evening (5pm) to avoid sleep disturbances at night due to increased urination.

Furosemide works in your kidney to increase the number of times you urinate to get rid of excess water and salts (potassium and sodium).

You may experience:

  • Frequent urination

  • Dizziness

You should sit or lie down until you feel better. You can talk to your doctor if this becomes unbearable.

  • Nausea

  • Thirst

  • Headache

  • Dry mouth

  • You may eat normally while taking furosemide. You should however reduce your salt intake.

This medicine can decrease your potassium(K) levels in the body. You can reduce foods high on potassium such as pear(avocado), banana, salmon, citrus and nuts.

  • It is not recommended to take alcohol when taking spironolactone. Both substances can cause your blood pressure to drop (hypotension), and dizziness.

Alcohol is also harmful to the liver and in heart failure or high blood pressure.

  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you want to use any painkillers (aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen).

Most painkillers (NSAIDs) can reduce the effectiveness of furosemide. Furosemide can also increase the risk of kidney problems associated with painkillers.

  • If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Furosemide can make you feel dizzy. It is not advisable to drive or operate machinery when you experience these symptoms.

    Furosemide isn’t addictive.

    • This medication can alter your cycle and temporarily cause infertility in women. This resolves after you stop taking spironolactone.

    • Spironolactone has not been shown to affect sexual performance.

    • Furosemide does not affect contraceptives. It is however not advisable for women with high blood pressure to take contraceptives.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you want a contraceptive method.

    • You should talk to your doctor if you want to get pregnant, you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    • Furosemide may be prescribed in pregnancy or when breastfeeding if necessary. You shouldn’t take spironolactone without a prescription.

    • Furosemide is unlikely to harm your baby but may reduce the amount of breastmilk you produce.

You should observe your baby and talk to your pharmacist or doctor if he/she feeds poorly or you have any concerns.
