Fungal infections can affect the vagina, breasts, in between fingers or toes, tip of penis, inner thighs, mouth, and armpits. Clotrimazole is usually available as a cream or pessary (tablet to be inserted in the vagina).
Vaginal yeast infections are usually caused by a microorganism knows as Candida albicans. Candida infections occur when the balance of the natural microorganisms in the vagina become disturbed.
This imbalance can be caused by pregnancy, taking contraceptive pills, washing the vagina with soaps and the use of antibiotics.
Damage to the walls of the vagina through sex or tampons can also encourage yeast infections. Materials that promote moisture, such as synthetic underpants and panty liners, can also promote yeast infections.
To reduce the reoccurrence of infections:
You should avoid taking antibiotics without a prescription. This will lead to bacteria getting used to how antibiotics work and making treatment of subsequent infections difficult.

Clotrimazole works by affecting the formation of essential chemicals (ergosterol) responsible for the growth of yeasts. This causes the covering shell (membrane) of the microorganism to leak and subsequent death of the microorganism.
You may experience:
Burning sensation
Itching
Abdominal pain
You may eat normally while taking clotrimazole.
If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.
If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.
If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.
You should take antibiotics for the duration prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better before the end of the given period. This completely clears the infection and prevents bacteria from developing mechanisms against medications.
Clotrimazole hasn’t been shown to affect sexual performance, fertility or contraceptives.
If you are using clotrimazole for vaginal infections, pause when having your period and continue afterwards.
Clotrimazole can affect the effectiveness of condoms and make them tear easily.
This effect can occur up to two days after use of clotrimazole. It is advisable to wait till you have completed treatment before you engage in penetrative sex.
You can take clotrimazole for yeast infections while pregnant or breastfeeding with consent from your doctor.
Use the finger for insertion when pregnant and not the provided applicator in the package.
If you are treating your baby for oral thrush, apply some cream on your nipple after breastfeeding.
