Clindamycin

Clindamycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat parasitical and bacterial infections of the lungs, abdomen, soft tissue (muscle, fat, blood vessels), gums, bones, vagina, skin and malaria infections.

Clindamycin can be supplied as a capsule, suspension (liquid to be swallowed), or injection.

You should not take any antibiotics without a prescription. This will lead to bacteria getting used to how antibiotics work and making treatment of subsequent infections difficult.

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic. It works by interfering with the production of necessary proteins in microorganisms. This restricts the growth of bacteria.

You may experience:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Stomach pains

You may eat normally while taking clindamycin.

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Useful information

You should take antibiotics for the duration prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better before the end of the given period. This completely clears the infection and prevents bacteria from developing mechanisms against medications.

Clindamycin does not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Clindamycin isn’t addictive.

Clindamycin hasn’t been shown to affect sexual performance, fertility or contraceptives.

Useful information

If you get vaginal thrush after taking clindamycin, continue with your medications and inform your pharmacist or doctor.

It isn’t recommended to use clindamycin while pregnant with consent from your doctor.

Clindamycin can be found in breast milk. Don’t take then medication when breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.
