Carbimazole

Carbimazole is used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). People with an overactive thyroid experience mood swings, weight loss and sweating.

The thyroid is an organ that produces hormones and located in the neck region. The hormones produced by the thyroid control your temperature, heart rate, brain development, and other important body functions.

The thyroid gland requires iodine for its normal function. Carmbimazole is converted to methimazole in the body and disrupts the processing of iodine needed for use by the thyroid.

You may experience:

  • Dizziness

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Nausea

  • Itchy skin

  • Thinning hair

  • Painful joints

  • Yellow coloration of palms and white of eyes

  • You may eat normally while taking carbimazole.

Excess iodine is not recommended if you are treating an overactive thyroid. It is advisable to adopt a low iodine diet, such as avoiding cheese, eggs, and processed foods.

  • Alcohol can worsen dizzy side effects. Alcohol also worsens high blood pressure. Consumption of alcohol is therefore not recommended.

  • If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

You should not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness while taking carbimazole.

    Carbimazole isn’t addictive.

Carbimazole does not affect the effectiveness of contraceptives, fertility or sexual function.

    • Inform your doctor early on if you get pregnant whilst taking carbimazole. It is not recommended to take carbimazole when pregnant because it can cause birth defects. Your doctor will prescribe a safer medication, propylthiouracil for treatment.

    • Don’t take carbimazole when breastfeeding without the consent of your doctor.
