Beclomethasone (inhaler)

Beclomethasone inhalers are used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Beclomethasone may be available as an inhaler, creams and ointments or tablets.

Useful information

It prevents you from developing an episode of breathlessness and coughing.

Beclomethasone inhalers are not suitable for managing an attack that has already started.

Beclomethasone is similar to hormones (corticosteroid) produced in the body. Beclomethasone reduces the immune (defense) response or inflammation(swelling) in the airways.

You may experience:

  • Oral thrush (fungal infections in the mouth and throat)

  • Dry mouth

  • Cough

  • Hoarseness of voice

  • Sore throat

Useful information

Brush your teeth or rinse your mouth after using steroid inhalers to reduce side effects.

A spacer can also help reduce side effects.

You can eat normally when taking beclomethasone.

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Useful information

You should use your beclomethasone inhaler every day even if you don’t have your symptoms. This helps prevent an attack.

You can drive when using beclomethasone.

Beclomethasone isn’t addictive.

Beclomethasone has not been proven to affect sexual function, fertility or contraceptives.

Don’t use beclomethasone during pregnancy without informing your doctor. Steroids can be harmful to your unborn baby.

Very little amount of beclomethasone from inhaler use is found in breast milk. Talk to your doctor before use if breastfeeding.
